“Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me,” is a familiar refrain to many. For some of us today, it seems that peace is somewhat fleeting as many concerns push in from every side, especially for parents. Increasingly, we read that children are susceptible to some of the same stressors.
Atmosphere is the Key
The atmosphere in which we and our children live is determined by two things: the external atmosphere of the people around us (family, work, school); and the internal atmosphere of our thoughts, feelings, and imagination. If those around us elicit thoughts and a spirit of anger, frustration, anxiety, or worry, we pick up those ideas and emotions and they become part of us. Alternatively, if our family members, co-workers, or other students are at peace and confident, we gain that way of life.
How We Guide Our Students
At Plumfield, our daily morning prayer moments provide our students the means to cultivate a remedy to the stresses which impinge upon them and the stresses they harbor.
Saying, “I’m sorry,” or “I forgive you,” frees them from hurt, resentment, bitterness, and ill will. In time, they are freed and realize a rightness in their relationships.
For who or what am I grateful? We find there is much to be grateful for. This simple reflection redirects their negative thoughts and worries; so a joy may fill their mind, heart, and soul.
Who would you like to have a great day? Our blessing reflection provides them an opportunity to think good thoughts toward their loved ones, but also those who have hurt them or others. These thoughts lead them to positive words and action.
Our Meditation moment reflects on a scripture verse which provides a wisdom perspective on life. Much of the atmosphere in their lives is transformed by a thought perspective which trusts in a divine presence.
Contemplation, coming to quiet externally and internally, offers them an awareness of their ability to come to a quiet peace. This peace makes them aware of another way and that the stresses in their life are fleeting.
Cultivating Habits
Fostering these habits of reflection (prayer) offers each of them the means to live a life of love, joy, and peace. At Plumfield, we desire this way of life and cultivate it in our students. As a result, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me,” can become a reality.
